'I want 20,000,000 people in Australia and I want them in my lifetime.' So said Arthur Calwell Minister for Immigration, in 1948.

A rapid increase in population was vital to the success of Australia's postwar plans for defence and economic development. For the first time, the Australian Government looked beyond Britain for the people who would be 'tomorrow's Australians'.

Australia, Land of Tomorrow explores the policies, processes and people involved in this population expansion.
