Reading rooms

Julie Ennor-Jones and Vida Mary Piper in the Canberra reading room, 2009
Due to the relocation of the Archives' National Office, the Canberra reading room will be closed from Monday 9 October to Friday 13 October 2017.

The reading room will reopen at Old Parliament House on Monday 16 October 2017.

Access to original records will not be available while the reading room is closed.

More information.

View original records, including documents, maps and audio-visual material, in our reading rooms in each capital city.

If you are planning a visit to our reading rooms, check the location of the records you wish to see and whether they are available for viewing. Records can only be viewed at the state or territory office where they are held.

Submit your request to view records at least a week before your planned visit so that we can retrieve them from offsite storage.

Records need to be access examined before they can be viewed. You can see if a record is 'open' or 'open with exception' by using our online database RecordSearch.

You can also use RecordSearch to:

  • view online digital copies of records
  • order copies of records
  • register as a researcher (if you wish to view records in a reading room)
  • request to view 'open' or 'open with exception' records in a reading room
  • request to have records access examined.

For information on our reading room opening hours, see Fact Sheet 1 – Reading room addresses and hours of opening.
