Sentencing

Deciding whether to keep, destroy or transfer

Sentencing is the process of using a records authority or general records authority to decide whether to retain, destroy or transfer a record.

The National Archives publication Sentencing (pdf, 172kb) will help you plan and complete a sentencing project. We also have a decision tree to help determine which tool should be used to sentence records.

Once you have sentenced records, you should also look at the information on this website about transferring records and compliant destruction of Australian Government records.
