Margaret Chalker, Assistant Director-General, Government Information Management
Margaret Chalker has been with the Archives since May 2005 and in her current role since the Government Information Management branch was established in early 2007. The role of the branch is to provide a strong focus on information and records management across the Australian Government.
Before joining the National Archives, Margaret spent 12 years at the Australian Sports Commission/Australian Institute of Sport. Her roles there included Manager, Marketing and Communication Services and Director, Corporate Communications. During this time her responsibilities included publications, corporate identity and marketing, events and sponsorship and media liaison during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
In her earlier career Margaret worked in the public programs area of the National Library, was the first Public Affairs Manager at the National Science and Technology Centre and a Senior Adviser to the then Federal Minister for the Arts, Heritage and Environment. She also held positions with the Australia Council and the Australian Schools Commission. For Margaret, a highlight of this time was her involvement in negotiations with overseas governments on their participation in celebrating Australia's bicentenary.
Margaret has assisted the National Library of Australia's oral history program and continues her interest in this work. Her oral history subjects include Arthur Boyd and Phillip Adams.
